What and Why?
A portfolio is a selection of a pupil's work collected over a term, semester or school year. The purpose of the portfolio, at this age, is to provide a tangible record of a pupil's progress and to give the pupil an opportunity to reflect on his / her work.
Practical ideas
- The first time you introduce portfolio work to the pupils, explain that they can collect their work in a file or drawer and choose 4-6 pieces to keep at the end of the term.
- Explain how the portfolio works in MT.
- Encourage pupils to improve or add to their work during the term.
- Ask pupils to choose different kinds of work to go in their portfolio, for example drawings, writing, cassettes / CDs / MP3s, craft work.
- Allow time for the pupils to look at other children's portfolio work during the term.
- Allow time to discuss with the pupils how they can improve certain pieces of work.
